ATHENS, Tenn. – The No. 11-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated Tennessee Wesleyan University, 85-49, Monday evening inside James L. Robb Gymnasium. The 85 points is the team's second-highest output of the season while the 45 points they allowed is the second-lowest mark of the year.
Kyra Whitaker scored a game-high 21 points and dished out four assists while
Emma Tuominen scored a season-high 13 points off the bench while adding six rebounds and recording three assists.
DeAnn Kauffman added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals while
Alexis Hill and
Erika Foy had nine points each, with the former adding six rebounds and the latter grabbing five boards.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but a triple from Kauffman put Tech up 8-7 at the 5:39 mark and sparked an 8-4 run to give them a 13-9 advantage. The Warriors would hold a 16-13 lead at the end of the quarter though, thanks to a 2:33 scoring drought from the hosts.
A three-pointer from Whitaker sparked a 9-0 run for the Orange and Black in the second quarter to put them ahead 32-16 with 4:47 left in the opening half and force the Bulldogs to call a timeout. The Warriors kept the pressure up on both sides of the floor as they as they closed the half on a 7-0 spurt and held TWU scoreless for the final 2:47 of the period. Tech would outscore Tennessee Wesleyan 27-9 in the quarter to take a 43-22 lead into the locker room.
Tech continued to build their lead in the third quarter thanks to two more triples from Whitaker, who finished the game with five made three pointers. The Warriors lead never dipped under 18 during the second half while they extended their advantage to as many as 37 points to snap the two-game losing skid.
Tech (9-3) returns to action on Tuesday, December 17 as they conclude their trip to the Volunteer State with a matchup against No. 17-ranked Bryan College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. from Summers Gymnasium.
