FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana Tech wrestling team concluded its regular season on Sunday afternoon as they defeated NCAA Division III foe Manchester University, 50-6, inside the Schaefer Center. With the victory head coach
Thomas Pompei picked up his 44
th career win, tying him with former coach Mike Ester for the most in program history.
Jonathan Watkins started off the match with a 14-4 major decision in the 165-lbs. bout, dominating the third period with a pair of four near falls and a takedown.
Jacob Gross followed up that with an 18-2 tech fall, recording four takedowns and two near falls to pick up the win in the second period.
Jake Weimer and
Oscar Martinez recorded back-to-back falls in the first period to give the Warriors a 21-0 lead after four matches. The Spartans won their lone match in the heavyweight bout to make it 21-6, but Tech came right back with four straight wins, all with bonus points to win 50-6.
Sawyer Miller picked up a 20-3 tech fall while the hosts notched back-to-back forfeits to put the dual out of reach.
Robert Humphrey and
Mason Gaines ended the meet with back-to-back pins, both coming in the first period as well.
Erique Early and
Justin Atkinson would pick up wins in exhibition matches, with Early notching a pin in the second while Atkinson won 6-2.
Tech finishes their dual schedule with a 9-4 record. The Warriors return to action on Saturday, February 16 as they travel to the Lone Star State and look to repeat as conference champions at the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships at Wayland Baptist University. Action is set to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
