CORINTH, Miss. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team opened up its 2019 season with an upset over No. 2-ranked and reigning NAIA National Runner-Up Freed-Hardeman, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Corinth High School.
The Warriors scoring came in the third inning as they took advantage of three hit batters and a pair of walks to push across a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Branson Dossen drew a bases-loaded walk to push across
Trevor MacDonald for Tech's first run of the season while
Jacob Alvidrez was hit in the next at-bat to score
Reese Olden for the two-run lead.
The Lions offense was stymied by the combination for
Nate McBroom and
Dan Shaw for eight-plus innings until the bottom of the eighth when the hosts were able to push across the plate on a sacrifice fly, but
Joe Pratt recovered from a shaky eighth with a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to save the game for the Orange and Black.
McBroom pitched four innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win while Shaw threw three innings of shutout ball. Alvidrez and
Glen McClain each went 2-3 at the plate.
Tech (1-0) returns to action Saturday as they conclude their opening weekend of play with a doubleheader against Freed-Hardeman. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. EST from Corinth High School.
