Tech Avoids Hornets’ Sting in 11-10 Win

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, and the first victory for head coach Alexis DiGiovanni, with an 11-10 triumph over NCAA Division III foe Kalamazoo College Wednesday evening at Mackenzie Field.

Abby Barkdull started the scoring just over two minutes into the game with her fifth goal of the season with McKenna Mesclier made it 2-0 Tech with 24:48 to play in the first half. Kalamazoo answered back with two quick goals in the next two minutes to tie the game up, but Mesciler put the Warriors back up by two with goals at the 15:40 and 10:55. In a déjà vu scenario, the Hornets came back with two more goals less than two minutes later. Bailey Childs put the visitors up 5-4 with 5:14 left in the half, but the hosts knotted the score up at 5-5 with 44 seconds left in the period.

Kalamazoo kicked off the second half with three straight goals in the first seven minutes, but Briana Schmidt found the back of the cage with 20:17 to go on the power play to start a 3-0 run to tie the game up at 8-8 with 13:48 left on the clock. The two sides traded goals over the next two minutes and headed into the final 10 minutes of regulation. Abigail Spencer scored the game-winner with 7:04 to play for her second goals of the game while Sydney Davis made a stop on a free-position attempt with 6:48 left as Kalamazoo managed just one shot on goal down the stretch as the Warriors held on to win.

Mesclier scored a game-high four goals while Jennifer Banks added two scores. Childs won four draws while Jordyn Brooks picked up four ground balls. Sydney Davis made 15 saves in the win.

Tech (1-1) returns to action on Saturday as they head south to take on No. 1-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) – Savannah. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m. from the SCAD Athletics Complex in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
