GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 16-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team closed out its opening weekend of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action on Sunday with a split against Aquinas College, winning game one, 13-1, in seven innings, and falling 9-6 in game two at DeWitt Field.
The Saints held the Warriors off the scoreboard until the fifth inning in game one when
Glen McClain drove in
Jacob Alvidrez to start a two-out rally while
Branson Dossen followed that up with an RBI single of his own to plate
Reese Olden. After the two teams traded runs over the next two frames, Tech put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh as they scored 10 runs off 12 hits and two errors. McClain started off the scoring with an RBI double two batters into the frame while a
Christian De Los Santos homer and a two-RBI double from Dossen tacked on four more runs.
Dossen and Olden each recorded a team-best three hits while the latter scored three times.
Charles Dunavan picked up the win after going five innings on the hill and scattering five hits while allowing one run.
Tanner Perkins picked up the save after entering the game in the sixth with a 2-1 lead.
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two, as
Grant Heisinger scored on a Saints error while
Jashaun Simon reached home on a double steal attempt with two outs. Tech doubled their lead in the fourth thanks to a pair of sacrifice flies from
Alex Vydick and
Brandon Burch.
The Saints came back with three runs in the fifth and took the lead in the seventh as they scored six runs off five hits where the hosts sent eight batters up to the plate. A two-run homer from McClain cut the deficit to 9-6 in the top of the ninth to give the Orange and Black some late life and just one out on the scoreboard, but Aquinas salvaged the split by getting the final two outs of the game.
Vydick went 3-3 in the game while McClain tallied two more hits. Spencer McGhee got the no decision after scattering five hits over four innings and striking out three.
Tech (16-8, 3-1 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to Indiana Wesleyan University for a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from the IWU Baseball Field.
