GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team swept Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) rival Cornerstone University Friday afternoon at the CU Softball Stadium, winning game one, 7-2, and game two, 6-4.
Tech took a 1-0 lead in the third off a two-out RBI double from
Emily Martin that drove in
Brianna Glass, but the Golden Eagles responded with a two-out two-RBI double with two outs in the fourth to go up 2-1.
Ali LeNoue drove in Glass three batters into the top of the fifth to knot the game up at 2-2 while a triple from
Payton Robinson knocked in two runs to put the Warriors up 4-2.
The visitors put up two more runs in the sixth while Robinson homered in the seventh to make it a five-run game.
Ashley Alvey came on in to pitch in the fifth and allowed just three base runners over the final three innings to pick up her first save of the season and got out of a one-out jam with runners at second and third in her first inning of work.
Amanda Shonka picked up the win after scattering five hits and two runs over four innings. Glass knocked out a game-high four hits while Robinson was 3-4 with three RBI.
Caitlyn Walter also notched three hits in the opener.
The Orange and Black got on the scoreboard early in game two as
Nicolle Sierra doubled in
Emily Martin four batters into the game. Another RBI double from LeNoue made it a 2-0 game in the third, but Cornerstone responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame and two more runs in the fourth to knot the game up at 3-3.
Four straight hits from the Warriors resulted in three runs in the fifth as they retook the lead for good. Glass started off the inning with a bunt single and a stolen base while back-to-back singles from LeNoue and Martin, and a double from Sierra, changed the momentum of the game quickly.
Sarah Ratledge shut down the Golden Eagles over the final 3.1 innings to notch the win and complete the sweep. Martin and Sierra each recorded three hits with the former and Glass both scoring twice.
Tech (9-14, 3-1 WHAC) returns to action on Monday as they return to Grand Rapids for a twin bill against Aquinas College, which was postponed from its originally scheduled date Saturday due to weather. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on the campus of Davenport University.
