Tech Splits with Saints to Start Busy Week

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Indiana Tech softball team kicked off a 10-game week on Monday as they split with Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) foe Aquinas College at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, winning game one in five innings, 13-4, before falling in game two, 9-4.

The Warriors kicked off quickly in the top of the first as they put up six runs on five hits, three walks and four stolen bases. Payton Robinson broke the game up with a grand slam five batters into the contest while Caitlyn Walter drove in Kari LaFreniere with a sacrifice bunt to make it a 6-0 game.

A pair of doubles helped the Saints cut the deficit to 6-2 in the home half of the first, but Tech came right back with two more runs in the top of the second thanks to RBI singles from LaFreniere and Amanda Shonka. The Warrior offense continued to churn in the third as they pushed three more runs across the plate, with Robinson collecting her sixth RBI of the game with a double to score Emily Martin.

Aquinas scored two more runs in the bottom of the third, but Ashley Alvey would shut them down for the final three innings of the game to secure the win, allowing just one run on four hits. Robinson and Brianna Glass each finished with four hits while every batter Tech sent up to the plate recorded a hit.

The hosts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to back-to-back home runs while three straight doubles gave the Saints two more runs in the third to extend their advantage to 5-0. Tech took advantage of a Saints error in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but two more homers from Aquinas in the sixth put the game out of reach as they salvaged the split.

Martin cranked out three hits in the nightcap while Walter added two.

Tech (10-15, 4-2 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday as they host Cleary University in a conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from Warrior Park.
