Warriors Claim Share of WHAC Title with Win over Blue Devils

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team claimed a share of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) title for the second year in a row as they defeated No. 8-ranked Lawrence Tech, 14-13, on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Athletic Field.
 
Abby Barkdull put the Warriors up 1-0 just 48 seconds into the game, but the Blue Devils countered with three goals over the next eight minutes to go up. The two sides traded goals over the next five minutes before Bailey Childs knotted the game up at 5-5 with 9:13 left in the first half.
 
Lawrence Tech regained the lead three minutes later and the two teams continued to trade goals through the rest of the first half, with Jennifer Banks making it an 8-8 game with 2:21 left in the opening half and the two Tech's went into the intermission all tied up.
 
Barkdull would score the first goal of the second half to put the Warriors up 9-8, but the visitors responded with two goals to take a 10-9 lead. Barkdull answered right back with back-to-back goals to make it a 12-11 game in favor of the Orange and Black with 18:14 left in the game.
 
LTU scored three goals in a seven-minute span to take a 13-12 advantage with 6:16 to go after trailing 12-10 at the 15:27 mark, but the freshman duo of Abbey Wilson and Barkdull managed to get shots past the LTU goalie at the 3:01 and 2:35 marks, respectively, to give the hosts a 14-13 lead. Tech killed off a woman-advantage penalty while a caused turnover from Sabrina Foest and a Warrior clear iced the game.
 
Barkdull finished the game with five goals and two assists while Bailey Childs had three goals, f our groundballs, four caused turnovers and nine ground balls. Sydney Davis made seven saves in the cage.
 
The Warriors now own a half-game lead with two-games to play in the conference slate and have won a share of the WHAC title for the fifth time in program history.
 
Tech (10-2, 7-0 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to Concordia University (Mich.). Opening draw is set for 5 p.m. from Cardinal Stadium.
