Warriors Sweep Trolls in Good Friday Tilt

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team swept Trinity Christian College in a nonconference doubleheader on Friday at Warrior Park, winning 10-4 and 10-2.

Emily Martin put the Warriors on the board just three batters into their first time up to the plate with a two-run homer to center field after Brianna Glass led off the game with a four-pitch walk and two stolen bases on consecutive pitches.

Glass led off the second Tech scoring rally of the game in the third with a bunt single and promptly stole two more bases. A one-out infield single from Kari LaFreniere drove in Glass while Ashley Alvey followed that up with a single up the middle to score Martin. Amanda Shonka helped her own cause with a double down the right field line to drive in two runs while Nicolle Sierra scorched a double down the left field line to make it an 8-1 game.

The Trolls responded with three runs in the fourth, but that would be all they would get as Amanda Shonka returned to pitch in the frame to get out of the jam and allow just three more base runners the rest of the game to pick up the win. She finished the game with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.

The Warrior bats would be quick to work in game two as they scored three times in the bottom of the first. An infield single and a throwing error allowed Ali LeNoue to cross home plate first while a double from Alvey drove in Martin. A pair of wild pitches and another base hit from Alvey pushed four more runs across in the second as Tech extended its lead to 7-0.

A pair of doubles and a single up the middle allowed the visitors to put two runs up in the fifth, but an RBI groundout from Karsyn Kitchen in the bottom of the frame and a double from Emily Martin in the sixth put the hosts up by eight runs to enact the mercy rule.

Ashley Alvey got the win after striking out four while Kristen Wolfe picked up the save by going the final three innings of the game. Glass picked up another stolen base to give her 66 on the season, the most in the NAIA this season and 14 back of the national record. Alvey finished with two hits and three RBI while LeNoue and Paige Miller added doubles.

Tech (18-22) returns to action on Tuesday, April 23 as they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to finish game two of the doubleheader from April 10 against Concordia University (Mich.). The game will resume in the bottom of the fifth inning with Tech leading 7-3 at 3:30 p.m. from the Concordia Softball Field.
