FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 21-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team returned to action for the first time in 11 days due to postponements on Monday afternoon as they split with Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) doubleheader with the University of Michigan-Dearborn, winning game one 2-1 and falling in 11 innings in game two, 6-5.
The Warriors scored their two runs in the first game in the third inning thanks to an RBI fielder's choice and a double steal of second and home thanks to a rundown situation on the base baths. The Wolverines would score an unearned run in the eighth to cut the lead in half, but
Dan Shaw would retire four of the five batters he faced to lock down the save and the win for Tech.
Nate McBroom picked up the win after going 7.2 innings on the mound, scattering eight hits while striking out six batters.
Glen McClain went 3-3 in the game while
Jashaun Simon had two stolen bases.
Tech took advantage of a throwing error from the Wolverines in the first inning of game two following a bunt single from McClain that allowed
Jacob Alvidrez to score, but UM-Dearborn took advantage of an error and a wild pitch with two outs to score two unearned runs and take the 2-1 lead.
McClain promptly put the Orange and Black back ahead in the bottom of the frame with a two-out two-run homer to left field on the first pitch he saw, but the visitors went back ahead in the fifth with three more runs as they took advantage of two more defensive miscues by the hosts.
Down to their final three outs,
Reese Olden led off the bottom of the ninth with a single while McClain launched his second home run of the game on the first pitch of the at-bat to knot the game up at 5-5 and chase UM-Dearborn starter John Dyda.
The tie would be short-lived though as the Wolverines went back up in the top of the 11
th off a pair of singles and a throwing error and held on to the win to salvage the split.
McClain went 3-4 in the game with four RBI's while
Landon Bloir allowed one unearned run and one hit over 4.2 innings of relief work.
Tech (26-14, 10-4 WHAC) continues a busy week of conference action to conclude the final week of the regular season Tuesday as they travel to Lourdes University for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from Mercy Field.
