LIVONIA, Mich. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team was swept by Madonna University on Saturday afternoon in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action at Illitch Ballpark, falling in 11 innings in game one, 6-5, and dropping a 5-3 decision in game two.
Tech kicked off the scoring in the third with three runs as
Jacob Alvidrez knocked in
Christian De Los Santos with a double while
Glen McClain homered two batters later to make it a 2-0 game. After pushing across a run in the bottom of the frame, Madonna tied it up in the fourth thanks to back-to-back hits with two outs.
The Crusaders took a 5-3 lead in the sixth with a two-out double, but a pinch-hit two-out RBI single from
Taylor Nychyk in the top of the ninth knotted the game up at 5-5 and sent the contest into extra innings. After the hosts escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 11
th, they fought off a 0-2 pitch with one out in the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle to give the Crusaders the win.
Alvidrez went 4-6 while McClain was 3-5.
Nate McBroom went five innings in the no-decision, scattering four runs off nine hits while
Dan Shaw went 5.1 innings on the mound and struck out seven.
The Warriors struck first again in the game two as McClain knocked in
Kyle Harvey with a sacrifice fly, but a two-out rally from the Crusaders in the bottom of the inning pushed two runs across the plate to give the hosts the lead. A three-run homer from Jalen Thomas in the fifth pushed the Madonna lead to 5-1 and while De Los Santos drove in runs for Tech in the sixth and eighth, the visitors left six runners on the bath paths over the final four innings as Madonna held on for the sweep.
Reese Olden went 3-5 at the dish while
Branson Dossen legged out a triple.
Landon Bloir did not allow a hit in four innings of relief work and struck out four.
Tech (20-12, 5-3 WHAC) returns to action on Sunday as they host Concordia University (Mich.) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. from Warrior Field.
