Tech Sweeps Rochester in Battle of the Warriors

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team swept Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) rival Rochester College on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Park, winning game one in 10 innings, 6-5 and game two in five innings, 8-0.

Rochester jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first of game one, scoring all of their runs with two outs on the scoreboard. A double from Payton Robinson and a single from Emily Martin cut the deficit in half though as Tech responded in the bottom of the inning.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Ali LeNoue started a rally with a double to score Brianna Glass while Robinson knocked in Kendall Galloway in the next at-bat to make it a one-run game. Emily Martin knotted the game up with an RBI single through the left side two batters later.

Both teams have several chances to take the lead over the next five innings, but Tech's Jaden Romero and Rochester's Alexis Evans and Autumn Dobrick kept the opposing offenses off the scoreboard until the 10th. After two quick outs by Tech, Ashley Alvey drew a full count walk and got to second one pitch later as Martin was hit by the ball. Kari LaFreniere capitalized right away as the freshman smacked the first pitch she saw through the left side to score Alvey and give the hosts the walk-off win.

Robinson went 4-6 with two RBI and two runs while Martin was 3-5 with two RBI. Jaden Romero threw 9.1 innings in relief to pick up the win, scattering 10 hits and allowing just one run while striking out six.

The Orange and Black were in control of game two from the start as they held Rochester to just three hits while knocking out nine of their own. Robinson and Sarah Cummings drove in the game's first two runs in the first while Tech rattled off five straight hits in the third to put up a five-spot in the inning and make it a 7-0 game. The hosts enacted the mercy rule with one out in the fifth as Karsyn Kitchen scored on a fielder's choice to second with the bases loaded but scored due to the RC catcher dropping the throw.

Cummings finished the game going 2-2 with two RBI while Robinson tacked on two more hits. Glass swiped two bags in the nightcap to increase her total to 57, the most in the NAIA and on track to break the single season record of 80.

Tech (14-19, 6-6 WHAC) returns to action on Sunday as they travel to perennial conference powerhouse Madonna University. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. from University Field on the Madonna Athletic Complex.
