MARION, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's tennis team had a historic weekend at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships as the team reached new heights at the annual championships on the campuses of Indiana Wesleyan University and Taylor University.
"Our program made a huge step forward this weekend in putting ourselves in the running as one of the best programs in the Midwest," said head coach
Brock Orlowski. "I am so proud of our team's effort and focus throughout the tournament in making history for Warrior Tennis. It is very rewarding to see the results from this weekend, knowing that it is all due to our players' hard work and dedication in practices."
Brunno Storani went 4-1 on the weekend and advanced to the semifinals, becoming the first play in program history to reach the final four of the tournament. He defeated opponents from Saint Francis, Lawrence Tech, Huntington and Marian, with the last three foes ranked eighth, ninth and 16
th in the draw, before falling to fourth-seeded Marcos Salazar of the University of Northwestern Ohio in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles tandem of
Alvaro Garrido and
Alvaro Gomez also made history by becoming the first duo to advance to the finals of the main draw as they went 4-1, dropping just six games across their first three matches. The pair advanced to the finals with a 9-8 (5) win in the semifinals over the top-seeded duo of Grant Esposito and Martin Carrizo before falling to the third-seeded team of Salazar and Sergio Conde from UNOH, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.
Jafer Infante won the singles consolation draw with a 6-1 mark, bouncing back from a first-round exit in the main draw to win his next six matches, capping off the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the finals over Huntington's Diego Tapia.
Tech returns to action on Thursday, September 26 as they return to Marion, Indiana for the start of the IWU Fall Classic, where they will take on Indiana Wesleyan Thursday evening and Judson University and Indiana University Southeast Friday. Match times are set for 4:30 p.m., 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from the Sutter Tennis Center.
