Warriors Tame Jaguars for 22nd Consecutive Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team ended its busy weekend in the Warrior Classic with a 72-41 victory over Governors State University Sunday afternoon in the Schaefer Center. The win is the 22nd straight for the Warriors.

Kyra Whitaker led all players in scoring with 17 points to ao along with two assists and two steals. Alexis Hill had 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals while Bethany Worm had 11 points and six rebounds. Emma Tuominen chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Jaguars handed the Warriors their first deficit of the young season just 75 seconds into the game as the hosts trailed 4-2, but proceeded to tie the game back up with a basket from Tuominen. The quarter saw three ties and four lead changes in all, but the visitors were never able to lead by more than a single possession. Tech took the lead for good on a Whitaker triple at the 6:07 mark and ended the period on a 6-2 run to take a 17-12 lead.

The Warriors found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter as they outscored the Jaguars 26-14, going 9-12 from the field and 4-6 from three-point range to take full control of the game. All seven players who saw action in the period scored at least one basket for the hosts while a 14-0 run over a four-minute stretch saw the Tech lead grow to 22 points. Governors State ended the half on a 5-0 spurt but the Warriors held a 43-26 lead at the break.

The third quarter turned into a defensive struggle as both teams combined for just 18 points, with eight of the Warriors 10 points coming from the free throw line and neither side shooting better than 25% from the floor. Tech did hold the Jaguars off the scoreboard for the final 4:46 of the quarter and was able to get the lead from dipping under 13 points.

Leading 53-34 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game, Tech began hitting on both sides of the court, shooting 70% (7-10) from the field while holding their opponents to just 2-9 from the floor. The Jaguars would not score until the 3:42 mark of the period as the Warriors went on a 13-0 run to put any shot of a comeback to rest and growing the lead to 32 points.

Tech (3-0) returns to action on Friday, November 6 as they host Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
