FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team extend its winning streak to 25 games with a 76-62 victory over Indiana University Kokomo Saturday afternoon inside the Schaefer Center.
Erika Foy had a team-high 16 points while
Kyra Whitaker had 14 points in the final three quarters of action.
Alexis Hill,
Taya Andrews and
Emma Tuominen each had 11 points, with Hill adding seven rebounds, four assists and four blocks, Andrews chipping in six assists and four rebounds while Tuominen had five rebounds and two assists.
Bethany Worm had 10 points, four rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Playing in front of an empty arena for the first time this season, the Warriors got off to a slow start against the Cougars, who were playing just their third game of the season after not playing from Oct. 31-Nov. 10. Foy led the way for the Orange and Black in the first 10 minutes with 11 points on 4-5 shooting, at one point scoring seven consecutive points for Tech. The Warriors led 9-4 with 6:19 to go in the quarter, but a 9-4 spurt from the visitors knotted at 13 with 2:36 on the clock.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth through the second quarter, with the hosts taking a 25-20 lead at the 6:12 mark, but the Cougars came right back with four straight points to make it a one-point affair. Tech punched back with a triple from
Laney Steckler to make it 29-24 at the 3:50 mark and held a five-point lead heading into the locker room at 33-28.
The third quarter would be controlled by Tuominen as the senior guard went 4-4 from the field en route to eight points as the Warriors attempted to put their opponents away for good in the third quarter as they pushed their lead up to nine points. Tech got a big momentum push late in the period thanks to back-to-back triples from Worm while a layup from Tuominen made it a 58-49 game headed into the fourth quarter.
IU Kokomo made a charge in the fourth quarter thanks to a 13-4 run over the first four minutes of the period to knot it up at 62 with 6:05 to play. Tech got back on top quickly though as Whitaker nailed a triple, three of her 11 points in the quarter, on the next possession following a timeout from the Cougars that sparked a 14-0 run to end the game and give the Warriors their 25
th consecutive victory.
Tech (6-0) returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 as they host Midway University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
