FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 14-ranked Indiana Tech men's wrestling team ended its regular season in style Thursday evening inside the Schaefer Center as they defeated Lourdes University, 25-17, on Senior Night.
The Gray Wolves started off the match on top thanks to a 14-8 win from Isaac Ingram at 184-lbs., but Tech took off the next four matches to take a 19-3 lead.
Mykiel Stallings picked up an 11-2 major decision thanks to five take-downs while
AJ Fowler scored a late takedown to score a 4-3 win over Alec Moore-Nash at 285-lbs.
After a forfeit for
Devon Johnsen at 125-lbs.,
Matthew Gimson notched a third-period pin to win the 133-lbs. bout and make it 19-3. Lourdes stopped the streak with a 12-0 win from second-ranked Nick Henneman at 141-lbs., but
Nate Wheeler put the momentum back on the Warriors side with a 3-1 win in overtime.
The visitors picked up bonus points at 157 and 165-lbs. to bring Lourdes with five points at 22-17 to ensure the dual would be decided in the final match of the evening between Grant Pittroff and Tech's lone senior,
Scottie Sopko, in the 184-lbs. battle.
After an evenly-matched first period, which saw Sopko leading 2-0 thanks to a takedown, the No. 13-ranked wrestler in the nation picked up five more points in the second to increase his lead to 7-1. Pittroff put a scare into the Schaefer Center with a takedown and a near-fall to turn up the pressure, but Sopko rebounded quickly with an escape and scored two more takedowns to take the bout 13-6 and give the Warriors the 25-17 win.
Tech finishes the regular season 6-5 in dual matches. The Warriors return to action on Friday, February 21 with the start of the 2020 Sooner Athletic Conference Championships at the Muller Sports Center on the campus of Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
