LIMA, Ohio – The Indiana Tech men's tennis team upset No. 14-ranked Cumberland University, 4-2, Saturday afternoon inside the Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center.
"I loved the way our guys competed," head coach
Brock Orlowski said. "They played a terrific match and never allowed Cumberland to get momentum or comfortable. We kept our food on the gas and earned a big win today."
Tech came away with the doubles point after sweeping all three matches, with the third flight of
Raybin Chan and
Juan Avellaneda posting a shutout and the first flight of
Alvaro Gomez and
Alvaro Garrido winning 6-2.
Cumberland took first and second singles to put the pressure on the Warriors, who were looking to snap a two-match losing skid, but Tech never blinked as they clinched the match with wins at the number three, four and five positions.
Brunno Storani won 6-1, 6-5 at number three while Avellaneda won 6-1, 6-4 at number four to get the Warriors to match point and Chan was able to seal the win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Tech (7-3) returns to action on Saturday, February 29 as they head to Aquinas College to kick off Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action. First serve is set for 2 p.m. from MVP Sportsplex.
