FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's volleyball team fell to No. 10-ranked Aquinas College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) Saturday evening in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play inside the Schaefer Center.
Cameron Ternent had nine kills and four digs while
Daynte Stewart had eight kills and five digs.
Chandler Davis dished out 28 assists and eight digs while
Chase Christiansen had three blocks.
Joey Hermes recorded a team-high 10 digs.
The Saints got out to an early lead over the Saints with a 7-3 run, but Tech responded with a 4-0 spurt to knot the set up at 7-7. Aquinas responded with a 4-0 run to go up 11-7 and gradually grew its lead to 18-13. The Warriors cut the deficit to 20-18, but a 5-1 run from the visitors gave them the first set win.
Tech got out to a 5-2 lead in the second set that was powered by a 3-0 run with a kill and block from Christiansen and an ace from Stewart. A 5-1 run from the Saints put them ahead 7-6, but the Orange and Black responded with a 4-0 spurt to retake the lead at 10-7. The Warriors held a slim advantage for the next several points and led 17-14, but a 6-0 run put Aquinas back in the driver's seat as they closed out the set on a 5-3 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Warriors did everything they could to ensure the match would not end in three sets a 6-0 run pushed them ahead 18-11 in the third. The Saints would not give in lightly though, battling back to cut the deficit to 19-16 following a 5-1 run. A 4-0 spurt from the visitors tied the set up at 21-21 and while Tech took the next two points to go up 23-21, Aquinas responded with four straight points to go up 24-23. Tech fought off one match point, but it would not slow down the defending NAIA National Runners-Up who took the next two points to complete the sweep.
Tech (7-12, 1-4 WHAC) returns to action Tuesday as they host Goshen College in a conference matchup. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
