INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana Tech men's wrestling defeats rival No. 12 Marian 34-12 to remain undefeated for the 2020-21 season.
No. 14
Nathan Orum started the match for the Warriors at 125 facing off against No. 17 Ty Haskins of Marian. Haskins scored the first points of the match with a takedown just a minute into action.
Orum gained two points on a reversal and tied the match at 2-2 after the first period. After being on bottom the entire second period,
Orum fought back in the third with a quick takedown to lead 4-2 followed by four back points to win the match 8-2 and give Tech a 3-0 lead overall.
Josh Goheen-Smith went out to take the forfeit victory at 133 and earn the Warriors six more points to lead the Knights 9-0.
At 141, No. 9
Kyle Kantola took the mat for Tech while No. 11 Blake Mulkey represented Marian. Mulkey started aggressively and recorded three takedowns in the match while
Kantola's only points came from escapes in the 8-3 decision loss, where the Knights recorded their first points of the match. Â
Antwaun Graves represented the Warriors at 149 and faced No. 9 Bailey Moore. It was an even battle with
Graves leading 1-0 early. Later in the match, Moore earned an escape point and later received two more for a takedown to win the match 3-1 and earn three points for the Knights. The Warriors now only led 9-6.
Brice Coleman came out aggressive at 157 against Ismael Conejo scoring early and often.
Coleman dominated the match and defeated Conejo 12-3 for a major decision victory and earned Indiana Tech four points to go ahead 13-6. Next up for the Warriors was
Sam York to challenge No. 17 Elliot Rodgers of Marian at 165. The two battled through the first period before Rodgers put
York in a tough position and eventually won via pin and earned six points for the Knights to get within one point (13-12). No. 10
Kolby Ferris then took the mat for the Warriors to battle Matt Burns of the Knights at 174.
Ferris came out dominated and got a takedown in the first minute of action before putting Burns to his back and pinning him in just 49 seconds to give Tech six more points and a 19-12 lead. At 184, No. 2
Eric Vermillion was set to face No. 5 Sam Osho. The match started and under a minute in, Osho became injured and
Vermillion earned the win and six points for the Orange and Black.
Jacob Brandt represented the Warriors at 197 and faced Zachary Worm of the Knights. Worm set the tone at the beginning of the match with an early takedown to lead 2-0.
Brandt was working to escape and get the reversal but went out of bounds before getting the reversal and was still able to score one point.
Brandt then defended a shot from Worm and turned it into his own takedown to lead 3-2 after the first period. Worm took and early 4-3 lead in the second before
Brandt escaped to tie it (4-4) and went on to get another takedown and two more points to lead 6-4.
Brandt tallied two more points at the beginning of the third to solidify a 9-4 victory with riding time and give the Warriors a 28-12 lead. To end the match, No. 17
Vernon Willis took the mat to face David Delph at 285.
Willis had an early takedown for two points before the action went out of bounds to reset the wrestlers at the middle of the mat. Delph attempted to escape but was returned to the mat by
Willis followed by
Willis rolling Delph to his back and pinning him for the 34-12 match victory for the Warriors.
