Men's Wrestling Remains Undefeated in the WHAC

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Indiana Tech men's wrestling wins their second WHAC match of the season with a 37-7 victory over No. 16 Lourdes.

No. 8 Nathan Orum opened the match for the Warriors at 125 against John Novak. The action was stagnant for the majority of the first period until Orum took a shot for a takedown as time was ending in the first period before going out of bounds. They were reset to the middle where Novak escaped for a quick one as time ran out to end the first period 2-1. Novak started on the bottom for the second period and escaped quickly to tie the match at 2-2 for the only points scored in the second. Orum chose bottom for the third and earned a quick reversal for two points before turning Novak on his back for four back points to take an 8-2 lead. Orum tallied a point for stalling right before the end of the match and earned another point for riding time to win 10-2 and earn four points for the Warriors.

No. 3 Matthew Gimson then took the mat for Tech at 133 to face No. 13 James Balazy. Gimson had a quick takedown for two before Balazy escaped to make the score 2-1 before Gimson tallied another takedown and rolled Balazy to his back for another four points to quickly lead 8-1. There was an injury timeout that eventually led to an injury default for six points to Indiana Tech. Tech now led 10-0 in the match. At 141, No. 16 Kyle Kantola represented the Orange and Black and No. 5 Nickalas Henneman took the mat for Lourdes. Henneman scored early and led 2-0 after the first period. They started the second period with Kantola on top and Henneman reversed for two more points to lead 4-0 after two periods of wrestling. A takedown, back points and riding time in the third period gave Henneman the 11-0 win and the first points for the Gray Wolves.

No. 19 Nate Wheeler wrestled at 149 for Tech while Christopher Jedding represented Lourdes. Wheeler had an early takedown for the only points of the first period to lead 2-0. The second period started in neutral where the wrestlers battled, but no points were scored. Wheeler started on bottom for the third period and quickly got a reversal for two points before Jedding escaped to make the score 4-1. Jedding kept his momentum and scored two points for a takedown to get within one (4-3). Wheeler was able to escape and put the score at 5-3 before securing another takedown to then roll Jedding to his back for four back points to win 11-3 and put the Warriors ahead 14-4. At 157, No. 18 Nick Gates of the Warriors faced No. 7 Blake Montrie of the Gray Wolves. An early stalling call on Gates gave Montrie an advantage that he kept with a takedown to lead 3-0 before Gates escaped to end the first period 3-1. Gates started on bottom for the second period and earned a quick point for escaping to get him within one (3-2). There was another stalling call on Gates and then a stalling call on Montrie to put the score at 4-3 at the end of the second period. The third period Gates started on top only for Montrie to escape to lead 5-3. Montrie scored another two before time was out to win the match and earn three points for the Gray Wolves (14-7).

Sam York took the mat for Indiana Tech at 165 to face Derick Coleman of Lourdes. York scored the only points of the first period with a takedown to lead 2-0. York started on top for the second period before Coleman escaped to make the score 2-1. No more points were scored in the second period and in the third period York started on bottom. York quickly escaped to lead 3-1 and began a series of takedown and releases. York won the match 10-3 by the end with a point for riding time to earn three points for Tech. No. 8 Kolby Ferris represented the Warriors at 174 against Carlton Roberts. Ferris scored early and often with a quick six points off the jump before being reset to the middle of the mat. Roberts attempted an escape, but Ferris quickly returned him to the mat to maintain control headed into the second period. The wrestlers started in neutral for the second period where Ferris once again had a quick takedown before Roberts escaped for his first points (8-1). Ferris defended a shot by Roberts and turned it into a takedown for two more points before an injury stopped the match. Ferris took the injury default and six points for the Warriors to lead 23-7.

At 184, No. 2 Eric Vermillion stepped onto the mat for Indiana Tech to face William Speight of Lourdes. Vermillion recorded a takedown in the first period to lead 2-0 heading into the second. Vermillion started on bottom for the second period and escaped very quickly for another point before tallying another two points right before the period ended to lead 5-0. It was a neutral start for the third period with Vermillion earning a quick takedown and put Speight to his back for four more points to lead 11-0. A stalling call gave Vermillion a 12-0 lead before Vermillion was able to get Speight to his back once again and seal the victory via pin in 6:34 for six points to the Warriors. Jacob Brandt took the mat for the Warriors at 197 to take on Nicholas Caruso. Brandt scrambled in the beginning and ended up with the takedown for two points before pushing Caruso to his back and earning two more points to lead 4-0 after the first period. Brandt was on bottom to start the second period and was up and out quickly for the escape point to make it a five-point lead. Brandt recorded another takedown in the second period to head into the final minutes leading 7-0. The third period started in neutral with Brandt quickly recording a series of takedown and releases to eventually win the match via major decision 16-3. The Warriors now led 33-7 heading into the final match of the night.

No. 14 Vernon Willis represented the Warriors at heavyweight to challenge Alec Moore-Nash of Lourdes. The two were evenly matched in the first period with no points scored before Willis took bottom to start the second period. Willis escaped quickly to lead 1-0 and then responded with a snatch and takedown for two points to lead 3-0. Willis rolled Moore-Nash to his back for four back points before the period ended to lead 7-0. Willis started the third period with another takedown before letting Moore-Nash go in order to get another takedown before the match ended to win 12-1 and earn the Warriors the 37-7 WHAC victory.

The Warriors are back on the mat Saturday, January 23rd when they host Lincoln College and Thomas More University for non-conference matches starting at 1 p.m.
