FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend inside the Schaefer Center, falling 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17) to Aquinas College Friday evening and losing 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 12-25, 23-25, 15-11) to Cornerstone University Saturday afternoon.
Andrea Schriver reached the 1,000 assist plateau Friday night against Aquinas with 27, becoming just the eighth player in program history to reach the quadruple digit mark.
Taylor Paul had a match-high 16 kills and two blocks while
Olivia Gessner had 17 digs.
The first three sets were all tight with four ties and two lead changes in the first, six ties in the second and three ties in the third. A 5-0 run from Aquinas in the first put them ahead 18-15 after trailing 11-7 earlier. Tech pushed back to make it 23-20, but could not overcome the deficit.
Aquinas pushed through some early deficits to take a commanding 20-13 lead in the second, only to see the Warriors battle back to make it a 23-21 set following a 7-1 run, but it was not enough as the Saints held on to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Warriors raced out to an 8-4 lead in the third set and pushed their advantage to 12-6, but the Saints came roaring back to cut the deficit to 17-16. Tech held steady though, pushing through with the 25-20 win to get back in the match.
The fourth set saw the visitors race out to a 9-5 lead, but the hosts battled back to make it a one-point set at 12-11. Aquinas stepped on the gas then with an 8-1 run to push the lead to 20-12 and grab all the momentum to complete the 3-1 win.
Madelyn Omo had a career-high 21 kills against Cornerstone along with eight blocks while Kelsey Schladenbrand had 30 assists and 19 digs. Paul recorded 18 kills while
Cali Allen had 11 kills and three blocks. Gessner had 23 digs while
Noelle VanOort had 19.
A first set with the Golden Eagles saw 17 ties and nine lead changes, but a 5-1 run by the visitors leading 22-20 was the difference as Cornerstone took the opening set. Cornerstone would again overcome numerous deficits in the second set to take a 23-20 lead, only to see the Warriors fight off two match points to make it 24-23, but the Golden Eagles would hold them off to go up 2-0.
Tech raced out to a 7-2 lead in the third and never looked back as they pushed their lead to 15-7 and then 19-9 with a flurry of momentum. The Warriors continued to push that strategy in the fourth with an 8-2 start, but the Golden Eagles soared back into the set to go up 18-16. Trailing 23-19 though, the Warriors rattled off six straight points to knot the match up at 2-2.
The two teams traded punches in the fifth, but a 5-0 run put Cornerstone up 10-6 and the Warriors could not recover as they dropped their third straight match.
Tech (17-11, 9-4 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday as they host the University of Northwestern Ohio in their annual Dig Pink game. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
