HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The No. 14-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team opened up the 2021-22 season Wednesday evening with a 61-50 win over Huntington University inside Platt Arena.
Emma Tuominen had a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists while
Kyra Whitaker scored 12 points.
Eileen Salisbury and
Erika Foy both put up nine points with the former adding three rebounds, two assists and two steals while the latter had 11 rebounds and two assists.
Tech started off with the lead thanks to a triple from Whitaker and pushed their early advantage up to 11-2 by the 6:35 mark of the first quarter. The Foresters cut the deficit down to 11-9 and held the Warriors scoreless for four minutes, but a three-pointer from Salisbury and jumper by Whitaker stopped the Huntington run and gave the visitors a 16-9 lead at the first quarter break.
The Warriors started the second on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 24-9, their largest of the game, and never led the Foresters get under 10 points in the period as they took a 30-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
Tech pushed their lead back up to 15 points to kick off the third, but the Foresters battled back and cut the deficit to 40-33 with 90 seconds to go in the quarter. The Warriors pushed the lead back up to 11 points with 7:23 to go in the fourth, only to see the hosts go on a 6-0 run and make it a 49-43 deficit with 5:13 on the clock. A bucket from Tuominen at the 4:26 mark, two of her eight points in the quarter, put Tech up by eight by the Foresters came right back to make it a 51-46 game with 3:18 to play. Another jumper from Tuominen and a triple from Salisbury put Tech up 56-46 with 1:43 to go and the Warriors never let Huntington get closer than eight points down the stretch as they 5-6 from the free throw line to ice the game away.
Tech (1-0) returns to action Saturday as they host the University of Saint Francis in their home opener. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. from the Schaefer Center.
