GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 9-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine games Tuesday evening as they defeated Aquinas College, 68-47, inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
Emma Tuominen led all players with a career-high 24 points on 12-17 shooting while adding 11 rebounds and three assists for her fourth double-double of the season.
Kyra Whitaker added 17 points, four rebounds and two assists while
Taya Andrews had 12 points and five rebounds.
The Saints got out to a 5-0 lead over the Warriors and led 9-4 at the 5:51 mark when a layup from Tuominen, who ended the first quarter with 12 points, started a 9-0 run for the visitors over the next three minutes where they held Aquinas scoreless for a 3:22 stretch. Tuominen capped the quarter by scoring the last six points for the Orange and Black to give them a 20-12 lead at the buzzer.
Tuominen put the Warriors up double digits on their second possession of the second and while the Saints cut the deficit back to single digits, they were never able to cut the lead to less than seven throughout the remainder of the half. Tech outscored the Saints 15-11 in the period but held the hosts to just 4-14 shooting from the field as they took a 35-23 lead into the locker room.
A triple to open the third from
Eileen Salisbury kickstarted an 11-4 run for the Warriors as they pushed the lead to 46-27. Tech extended their advantage to 20 points with 5:21 to go in the period and the Saints never got under the 20-point deficit for the remainder of the contest. A 22-9 run throughout the third quarter propelled the Warriors to a 57-32 lead and the Saints were never able to threaten again despite limiting Tech to just 11 points in the final 10 minutes of play.
Tech (9-0, 4-0 WHAC) returns to action on Saturday as they host the University of Rio Grande. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
