Warriors Run Away From Racers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 14-ranked Indiana Tech women's basketball team defeated the University of Northwestern Ohio 71-52, Saturday afternoon inside the Schaefer Center.

Kyra Whitaker led all players with 17 points and three assists while Erika Foy had 16 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. Taya Andrews recorded 10 points, five rebounds and two assists while Bethany Worm had nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench.

Tech got out to a fast start with an old-fashioned three-point play from Foy followed by a triple from Whitaker and a fastbreak bucket by Emma Tuominen to go up 8-2. The Racers responded with a 12-4 run to knot the game up at 14-all with 2:36 to play in the opening quarter, but the Warriors took the lead right back with a pair of free throws from Whitaker and didn't allow UNOH to score the rest of the period while leading 18-14.

Tech outshot the Racers 63.6% to 33.3% in the second quarter and outscored them 16-9 that included an 8-2 run over the final 3:13 of the half that propelled the hosts to a 34-23 lead the break.

The Warriors maintained a double-digit lead for most of the third quarter but an 8-2 spurt from the Racers got them within six points at 43-37 with 62 seconds to go in the period. A jumper and block from Whitaker sparked a 9-3 run from the Orange and Black with Foy scoring five of the team's nine points in the run to go ahead 52-40 with 6:56 to play. Following a bucket from the visitors to cut the lead back down to 10 points, the Warriors responded with a 10-0 lead of their own that was capped by back-to-back triples from Worm and Eileen Salisbury to push the advantage to 62-42 and seal the game with 3:35 to go.

Tech (11-1, 6-0 WHAC) returns to action Wednesday as they host Grace Christian University in a nonconference matchup. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
