FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Women's volleyball fights back to take their match with Cornerstone to four sets before coming up short in the fourth to fall 3-1.
Cornerstone had a quick start opening up the first set with a 5-0 run followed by another 5-0 run to lead 10-2. The Golden Eagles were ahead 16-3 before the Warriors were able to score more than one point consecutively. Tech scored five-straight to get within eight (16-8) and later had four unanswered points to get within five (18-13). Cornerstone managed to sequester any run by the Warriors and took the first set 25-17.
In the second set the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead and later 5-3 before Cornerstone started a 4-0 run to take the lead 7-5. After the Golden Eagles led 16-9, the two teams began trading points until the Warriors were able to secure three-straight to make the score 22-17. The Golden Eagles stole Tech's momentum and scored the next three to win the second set 25-17 and put them up two sets to none.
Cornerstone led 3-0 at the beginning of the third set before two kills by
Olivia Niekamp put the Warriors back in the game. Tech took this momentum to tie the game at 4-4, 5-5 and then 6-6 before taking the lead 8-6. The set was tied four more times before the Warriors took a 14-11 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back and went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. Cornerstone remained in the lead until the Warriors gained momentum and scored four-straight to take a 23-21 lead. Cornerstone answered with three of their own points to take back the lead 24-23. The Warriors were down 25-24 and fought to score the next three points and win the third set 27-25.
In the fourth set, the Golden Eagles led 3-0 only to motivate the Warriors who scored the next four points to take a 4-3 lead. The set was then tied five times with Tech never losing the lead until Cornerstone went on a 4-0 run to lead 11-8. Again, the two teams went back-and-forth with six more ties until Tech scored three in a row to take a 21-20 lead. The Golden Eagles used this to rally and scored the next five points to win the fourth set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Tech was led by freshman
Taylor Paul will 11 kills, two block assists and two digs while
Niekamp tallied nine kills, two block assists and two digs as well.
Kelsey Schaldenbrand led the Warriors in assists with 25 and recorded a double-double with 14 digs.
Andrea Schriver recorded 14 assists and nine digs in the match.
Jacey Blust tallied 17 digs and three assists in the game with
Mallory Green earning 16 digs and one service ace.
The Warriors are back on the court on Friday, February 19
th when they travel to Siena Heights for another conference match up at 8 p.m.
