FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Men's volleyball defeated No. 5 Lourdes in four sets tonight to serve the Gray Wolves their first loss of the season.
The Warriors got off to a slow start in the first set with the Gray Wolves leading 7-2. Tech slowly started to chip away at the lead before it became set point for Lourdes at 24-18. The Warriors scored the next five points to get within one (24-23) before Lourdes scored the final point to win the first set 25-23.
Lourdes started the second set similar to the first taking a 6-1 lead. The Warriors slowly chipped away to get within two (14-12) before the Gray Wolves went on a 6-0 run to lead 20-12. Tech answered with four straight points to make the score 20-16. Lourdes kept the lead until the set point, 24-20. The Warriors stole the momentum and scored the next six points to win the second set 26-24 and tie the match at 1-1.
Tech kept their momentum and energy into the third set when they jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The two teams began trading points until the Warriors went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to eight (14-6). The Warriors had a 4-0 run later in the set to lead 20-9 forcing the Gray Wolves into a timeout. Lourdes scored three straight points out of the timeout and then later three more to make the set score 22-16 in favor of the Warriors. Tech scored a point at a time until they won the set 25-18 to lead 2-1 in the match.
The Warriors scored the first point of the fourth set, but Lourdes quickly took the lead and led 6-3 before Tech could string together a couple points to stay within one (6-5). The Gray Wolves later led 10-8 until the Warriors scored four-straight to take a 12-10 lead. The Warriors did not give up that lead despite the Gray Wolves putting pressure on them always staying within a few points. Tech hung on to win the last set 25-22 and pull off the 3-1 upset of No. 5 Lourdes.
Daynte Stewart led the Warriors with 12 kills and 11 digs to secure the double-double while adding four blocks and one assist.
Mario Capo recorded 11 kills, eight digs and one assist and
Raekwan Rogers tallied ten kills.
Brandon Jones earned 35 assists on the night with seven digs, two service aces, and three kills. Both
Mason Milan and
Capo recorded four service aces while
Milan added nine digs.
Tech is back on the court Tuesday, February 16
th when they host another conference rival Cornerstone at 8 p.m.
