FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Women's volleyball pulls off the upset over #20 IU-Kokomo with the 3-1 win.
The first set started with back-and-forth action before the Warriors were able to gain some momentum and led 4-1. Despite an attempt for the Cougars to take the lead, Tech defended and rallied for a 3-0 run to lead 11-7. The Cougars got within two (12-10) before Tech had a 6-1 run to force the Cougars to take a timeout. After the timeout IU-Kokomo came out to score three unanswered before a service error gave the Warriors back the serve leading 19-14. The two teams began trading points before a solo block by
Havilyn Cummings followed by a kill from
Emma Westra got the Warriors to set point up 24-17. The Cougars scored one more point before
Cummings scored the final point for Tech to win the first set 25-17.
The Warriors took an early lead in the second set 6-3 and later 8-5. A block by the Cougars only motivated
Cummings to get the serve back for Tech and with a kill she did just that for the Warriors to lead 10-6. The Cougars continued to put the pressure on Tech, but Tech remained in the lead. With two kills from
Cummings and two from
Olivia Niekamp the Warriors led 20-15. The Warriors advanced their lead to 22-17 forcing the Cougars to take a timeout. After each team scored a point a block assist from
Madelyn Omo and
Westra made it set point and another block by
Madelyn Omo gave the Warriors the second set 25-18 and a 2-0 match lead.
The Cougars started the third set strong leading 3-1 before the Warriors rallied to tie the match 3-3 and take a 4-3 lead before the Cougars tied it again at 4-4. The back-and-forth action began with the two teams trading points with the set being tied at 6-6 and 7-7 before the Cougars were able to gain a two-point lead (10-8). Tech tied the set 10-10 before the Cougars had a 3-0 run to force the Warriors into a timeout. One more point for IU-Kokomo to lead 14-10 before
Amaya Anderson came in for Tech and had an immediate kill to stop the Cougars' run. IU-Kokomo led 17-11 when Tech took their second timeout of the set. Coming out of the timeout
Cummings gets the serve back for Tech with a kill from
Andrea Schriver. The Warriors were down 23-16 when
Omo and
Calista Helinski partnered up for a block before the Cougars made it set point leading 24-17. Tech battled for two more points before the Cougars won the third set 25-19.
The back-and-forth action started off the jump for the fourth set being tied five times before the Warriors had a 3-0 run forcing the Cougars into a timeout with the Warriors leading 10-7. Tech had a 4-1 run to take a 14-9 lead and later extended it to 17-11 with a 3-0 run forcing the Cougars into their second timeout. After the timeout the Warriors scored two more to lead 19-11 before IU-Kokomo was able to get back the serve. An attack error by the Cougars gave Tech back the serve only to have IU-Kokomo gain it right back. The Cougars scored two before the Warriors earned the serve and had a 4-0 run to make it match point at 24-14.
Helinski scored the final point of the match to help the Warriors upset the #20 team 3-1.
Cummings led the Warriors with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage along with two solo blocks.
Schriver earned 21 assists and recorded the double-double with ten digs.
Jacey Blust led Tech with 26 digs and six assists.
Madysn Cardinal tallied 13 digs while
Katrina Reynolds earned ten.
The Warriors are back on their home court Saturday, March 13
th when they host Siena Heights for a WHAC match up at 2 p.m.
