FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana Tech men's lacrosse team defeated its second top-10 opponent of the season Monday afternoon as they beat No. 6-ranked University of the Cumberlands 11-6 inside Warrior Athletic Field.
Justin Hindman had a game-high three goals and an assist while
Khanan Bodley and
Emmett Coleman had two goals each.
Nate Langille had eight ground balls, while
Tom Piotrowski had seven ground balls and caused five turnovers.
Andrew Neller went 14-19 from the face-off zone while
Joe Steigmeyer had nine saves to pick up the win in the cage.
The first quarter was a tightly fought affair, with just one goal through the first 13 minutes of play, but goals from Coleman and
Jack Marquardt in the final 90 seconds of the quarter put Tech up 3-0. The second quarter featured seven goals between the two teams, with the Patriots scoring twice within 20 seconds to cut the deficit to 5-4 and 4:32 left in the half, but Bodley put on past the UC goalie with seven seconds left on the clock to make it a 6-4 game.
Cumberlands showed their mettle by knotting the game back up with 9:15 to go in the third and the contest appeared to be headed into the fourth quarter tied up at six, but Coleman found the back of the cage for his second goal of the afternoon with 37 seconds left to put the Orange and Black back on top. That momentum carried over into the fourth quarter as the Warriors outscored the Patriots 4-0, with all four scores coming in a six-minute stretch to put the game out of reach.
Tech (4-0) returns to action Saturday for their second of five straight top-10 opponents as they host No. 6-ranked Benedictine College. Opening face-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from Warrior Athletic Field.
