ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Baseball went 1-3 at the Clayton Pfeiffer Memorial Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.
GAME 1: The Warriors opened up against Peru State at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Tech scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning that all began with
Jacob Daftari hitting a double to left center and then
Daftari tagging up to move to third on a flight out to centerfield.
Ashtin Moxey singled up the middle to get on base and to score
Daftari from third and give Tech a 1-0 lead.
Tech scored again in the top of the fifth inning when
Jacob Alvidrez singled to centerfield followed by a bunt from
Reese Olden to put runners on first and second with no outs. A flight out to right field gave
Alvidrez the opportunity to tag up and move to third and put himself into scoring position.
Mike Snyder put the ball in play to score
Alvidrez and earn Tech the 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Warriors held Peru scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when they scored three runs to win the game 3-2.
Moxey went 1-for-2 at the plate while both
Daftari and
Alvidrez were 1-for-3 with a run apiece.
Spenser McGhee pitched the first six innings of the game with eight strikeouts and one run while
Jared Gallagher pitched in the seventh inning and gave up two runs for the loss.
GAME 2: The second game of the weekend was against Missouri Baptist directly following the Peru State game. The Warriors scored early once again in the top of the second inning with
Daftari starting the action once again.
Daftari singled to third before
Jake Ritson stepped up to the plate and hit a double to deep left field to move
Daftari into scoring position.
Alex Vydick had a sacrifice fly to right center that scored
Daftari and gave Tech the 1-0 lead.
The Warriors struck again in the top of the fifth with
Ritson bunting for a hit to get on base.
Vydick put down a sacrifice bunt to move
Ritson to second before
Olden singled to left center and score
Riston from second base for Tech to lead 2-0. Missouri Baptist answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to get back within one (2-1).
The Warriors scored another in the top of the sixth and kept the action going in the top of the seventh with
Yeshua Saint hitting a single to left center and then later
Saint stealing second base with two outs.
McGhee earned a walk before
Snyder stepped up to the plate to hit a three-run homerun to give Tech the 6-1 lead. Tech then held off a comeback attempt from Missouri Baptist to earn the 6-4 win and end the action for Saturday.
Both
Christian Mojica and
Yeshua Saint went 1-for-1 in the batter's box while
Olden and
Snyder were 2-for-4.
Daftari and
McGhee were also both 1-for-3 while
Ritson went 2-for-3.
Charles Dunavan earned the win on the mound pitching five innings with six strikeouts while
Martin Eckard pitched for 1.1 innings and
Tyler Stacy earned the save pitching 0.2 innings.
GAME 3: Tech then moved on to face No. 10 Central Methodist for a doubleheader on Sunday. Central Methodist opened the game strong scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings and led 6-0 after four innings. In the top of the fifth the Warriors came alive with
Ritson hitting a single to left field with two outs.
Saint then stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run homer to put the Warriors on the board and within four (6-2). Central Methodist scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to end the scoring for the game for the Warriors to fall 8-2 in the first game.
Saint went 1-for-1 in the box while
Olden was 1-for-2, and
Ritson, Alvidrez and
Christian De Los Santos were all 1-for-3.
Hayes Sturtsman took the loss on the mound with 3.2 innings pitched and four strikeouts.
GAME 4: Central Methodist opened the second game with three runs in the first inning followed by another in the fifth to lead 4-0 with two innings left to play. In the bottom of the seventh the Warriors were desperate to get runs and
Saint hit a homerun to right field to put Tech on the board. The Warriors were unable to score anymore runs and fell 4-1 in their final game of the weekend.
Vydick was 1-for-2 at the plate while both
Saint and
Snyder were 1-for-3.
Saint earned the loss in the game pitching four innings with three strikeouts.
The Warriors are back in action Friday, March 12
th when they challenge Olivet Nazarene at 4 p.m. at Grand Park.
