FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Baseball sweeps Aquinas in a conference doubleheader.
In the first game, Aquinas took an early lead scoring one run in the top of the first. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the inning when
Trevor Patterson walked and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Alex Vydick. Jacob Daftari then stepped up to the plate and singled to score
Patterson and tied the game 1-1.
In the bottom of the third the Warriors struck again with
Reese Olden starting the inning with a double right field followed by a sacrifice bunt from
Patterson to move
Olden into scoring position at third.
Vydick hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored
Olden from third for Tech to lead 2-1. The Warriors struck again in the bottom of the fifth with one out.
Olden singled and
Patterson earned another walk before
Vydick singled to centerfield to load the bases.
Daftari flied out to centerfield for a sacrifice fly to score
Olden. The Warriors now led 3-1.
Tech gained some more control in the bottom of the sixth when
Christian De Los Santos singled up the middle and then with one out
Jake Ritson hit a ball to right field to get on base. With runners on first and second with two outs
Olden tripled to deep left centerfield to score two runs.
Patterson then doubled to centerfield to score
Olden and earn the Warriors a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Tech had a runner on first with two outs and
Spenser McGhee up to bat.
McGhee hit a homer deep over the right field fence to score two runs and put the Warriors ahead 8-1. Aquinas scored one run in the top of the eighth only for Tech to score on in the bottom of the eighth. The Saints attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth with a runner on first and two outs. A homerun for the Saints got them within five, but Aquinas ran out of time and Tech won the first game 9-4.
Freshman
Zach Zaborowski earned his first collegiate win on the mound with three strikeouts and 6.1 innings pitched while
Jared Maxfield earned the save with 2.2 innings pitched and two strikeouts.
Olden led the Warriors at the plate going 4-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs with a triple.
Patterson was 1-for-2 in the box with one run and one RBI.
The Warriors carried their offense into the second game starting in the bottom of the first when
Ritson singled to left field.
Daftari then singled to left field as well putting runners on first and second with one out.
Yeshua Saint also singled to left field to score
Ritson. The Warriors later loaded the bases with two outs when
Manuel Ascanio hit a double up the right side to score
Daftari, Saint and
De Los Santos and put the Warriors ahead 4-0.
Tech scored again in the bottom of the fourth and then solidified the win in the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth
Ascanio doubled to centerfield followed by a single from
Jayden Reed also to center that scored
Alex Mitchell who courtest ran for
Ascanio.
Mike Snyder then entered the game for a single to right field to score
Reed and earn the Warriors the 7-0 win.
Hayes Sturtsman earned the win with eight innings pitched with seven strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
Charles Dunavan finished the game, pitching one inning.
Ascanio went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs while
Ritson was 3-for-5 with one run.
Tech is back on the field Saturday, April 10
th when they host conference rival Rochester for a doubleheader set to start at 1 p.m.
