Warriors Deflate No. 6-Ranked Patriots Behind Simerman's Header

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The No. 14-ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team got revenge on No. 6-ranked University of the Cumberlands for ending their 2020-21 season Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 double overtime victory at the UC Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.

Just a little over four months after the Patriots defeated the Warriors in the championship match of the Fort Wayne Bracket in the NAIA's National Championship Opening Round, the Orange and Black came into the Volunteer State looking to erase some of the painful memories from late April as the two teams lined up against one another for the third time since last November.

The game-winning goal came in the 109th minute as Angel de Jorge crossed the ball into the box and it found the header of Jaxon Simerman who knocked in past the Patriots keeper to break a 2-2 tie. Tech got on the scoreboard just 112 seconds into the match as Antonio Marra put one into the goal off the pass from Pep Casas, but Cumberlands knotted the game up in the 16th minute.

Marra put the Warriors up 2-1 in the 43rd minute to give the visitors the momentum, but the hosts would not go down lightly as they found the back of the net in the 75th minute to know the match at 2-2. Cumberlands had a shot rattle the post in the 89th minute, but stayed out of the goal as the match went into extra time.

The Warriors stepped on the gas to begin overtime with three shots on goal in a 10-second stretch, but the Patriots Nathan Hart stopped all three attempts to keep the game knotted up. UC's best shot to win came in the 107th minute but Jaume Salvado made the save and the Warriors would come down and steal the match away shortly afterward.

Lucca Motta was credited with the assist on Marra's second goal while Salvado made two saves to pick up the win.

Tech (4-0-0) returns to action Thursday as they take on No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson College on the grass field of Racer Stadium in Lima, Ohio on the campus of the University of Northwestern Ohio. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
