GOSHEN, Ind. – The No. 9-ranked Indiana Tech men's volleyball team defeated Goshen College 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-20) Wednesday evening inside Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
Daynte Stewart had a match-high 17 kills to go along with 10 digs and a .323 hitting percentage while
Mason Milan added 12 kills and a team-best .409 attack percentage with six digs, four blocks and two service aces.
Brandon Jones dished out 39 assists while
Joey Hermes had 10 digs.
The first two sets were barn burners with 10 ties and three lead changes in the first that was followed by 12 ties and three lead changes in the second. Goshen controlled much of the action in the first and had a 20-15 lead until a 4-0 run from the Warriors brought them within a point. The Maple Leafs held the lead and pushed it to 22-20, but a 3-0 run from Tech gave them their first lead since 12-9. Tech benefited from a service error by the hosts while Milan aced the serve to take the first set.
The two Hoosier State rivals were neck-and-neck in the second most of the way, with the Warriors holding a slim 21-19 lead. Following a timeout by Goshen, the Maple Leafs took four of the next five points to go up 23-22 and got to set point, but a service error gave the ball back to Tech, who responded with an ace by
Raekwon Rogers. Goshen knotted the set back up at 25, but kills from
Chase Christiansen and Stewart sealed the 2-0 lead.
The Maple Leafs raced out to an 11-5 lead in the third and forced the Warriors to use an early timeout, but Tech chipped away at the deficit and went ahead following a 4-0 spurt that was a part of a larger 12-4 run to make it 17-16. Following two straight points from Goshen, the Warriors went on a 5-0 run to make it 22-18 and ended the match with a 3-0 run to complete the sweep.
Tech (8-0, 2-0 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they host Aquinas College. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from the Schaefer Center.
