LIVONIA, Mich. -- Indiana Tech claimed the Men's Soccer WHAC Tournament title Saturday, shooting to a 6-5 advantage over Madonna University in penalty kicks, following a 1-1 scoreline through regulation and overtime. The Warriors are now unbeaten in WHAC postseason play since 2018 and become the first WHAC program to win four tournaments in a row (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022), as UNOH (2015, 2016, 2017) was tied with Tech for the longest postseason streak at three.
Graduate student
Brendan Sidaway played in a record fifth league title match, joining teammates
Luke Jones and
Ryan Steele among a select few WHAC student-athletes to ever claim four tournament trophies.
One of those postseason veterans, Jones, staked Tech to a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute, beating MU's Youssou Ouendeno low to the bottom right corner with a right-footed effort from just outside the penalty area. The goal was Jones' fourth of the season and, incredibly, his third career goal in a WHAC final (2020, 2021, 2022).
The Warriors held the 1-0 advantage until the final 10 minutes, when Crusader Ryo Nakajima equalized at 80:29. Through regulation, the Orange & Black held a slight 17-14 advantage in shots -- though both teams left some clear chances begging down the stretch.
MU had the upper hand in the overtime periods, outshooting Tech 9-3 in extra time.
Jaume Salvado and the defensive unit weathered the storm, forcing the shootout.
In that shootout, Tech outlasted MU 6-5, with
Lucca Motta, David Ambaek, Aaron Asamoah, Jaume Castells Mas, Diego Perez, and Panagiotis Georgiou scoring from the spot. Salvado came up with two saves, before the final Crusader effort clanged off the left upright.
Tech (12-2-6) will learn its NAIA National Tournament fate on Monday, November 14th, when the field of 40 and opening round groups are announced. Tech and MU hold the WHAC's two automatic bids. Tech will appear in the NAIA event for the fourth-straight year. The NAIA Tournament selection show will premier on the NAIA's
YouTube channel at 1 PM easternÂ
