Warriors Sweep Gray Wolves in Top-10 Showdown, Notch 12th Straight Win

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The No. 7-ranked Indiana Tech men's volleyball team stayed hot Wednesday evening as they swept No. 10-ranked Lourdes University (26-24, 25-22, 29-27) in a battle of the 2021 WHAC co-champions inside the Ebeid Recreation Center while winning their 12th straight game to start the 2022 campaign.

Daynte Stewart had a team-best 15 kills to go along with five digs while Mason Milan and Dante Siracusa had 10 kills, with the former notching three blocks and three digs. Brandon Jones had 41 assists, eight digs and five blocks while Joey Hermes recorded 13 digs.

The Gray Wolves raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and held the advantage until late in the set as the Warriors used a 4-0 spurt to go ahead 22-20 as they slowly chipped away at the deficit. Following a timeout by Lourdes, the hosts stopped the run thanks to a kill form Jeff Lam, who had a match-high 22 kills. The two teams traded points over the next five serves, only to see the Gray Wolves fight off two set points to tie the game up at 24-24. A kill from Siracusa and a double block from Jones and Raekwon Rogers gave Tech the final two points and the 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set featured nine ties and four lead changes, with the Gray Wolves getting out to a 6-3 lead to start, followed by a 5-0 run from Tech to put them ahead 8-6. The back-and-forth action continued until a 5-1 run from the Warriors put them ahead 19-16 and forced the hosts to call a timeout. Tech pushed the advantage to 24-19, forcing Lourdes to use their final timeout of the set, which started a rally for the Gray Wolves who won the next three points to cut the deficit to 24-22. Milan ended the set with a kill however, to put the visitors up 2-0 in the match.

A marathon third set provided a thrilling end to the first of two matchups with the two orange and black schools, as the set was tied 21 different times while there were five lead changes. With Lourdes leading 23-22, the two sides proceeded to trade points over the next five serves until a kill from Rogers paired with a Lourdes error gave Tech a 26-25 lead and the chance to complete the sweep. The Gray Wolves staved off the sweep for the next four serves, but another attacking error gave Tech the 29-27 win and the 3-0 victory.

Tech (12-0, 6-0 WHAC) returns to action Saturday as they travel to Lawrence Tech. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from Don Ridler Field House.
