Warriors Win Back to Back WHAC Regular Season Titles

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The No. 14-ranked Indiana Tech men's ice hockey team won their second straight WHAC title after sweeping Lawrence Tech in what turned out to be quite an interesting weekend.

The first contest was held on Friday night at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse for Warrior Senior Night, in which the program honored the contributions of Alex Potter, Bobby Frieson, Joel Holmberg, and Matej Krasny.

It was the senior, Joel Holmberg, who put the Warriors on the board first on a power-play goal in the first period. The Blue Devils would respond with two minutes to play before the first intermission. The second period saw no scoring, which brought on the final intermission. After a series of Zamboni malfunctions, the ice was deemed unplayable, and the remainder of the Friday night contest was scheduled to be played on Saturday night at Lawrence Tech, just before game two of the series.

The Warriors struck fast, with Zach Bennett and Holmberg each scoring three minutes into the period, but the Blue Devils wouldn't let the game slip away like that, as they'd respond with two power-play goals, and the game would head to overtime. Neither team was able to go in the overtime period, forcing the game to go to a shootout. Zach Bennett and Fabian Granqvist would score on their attempts before Matej Krasny would seal the Warrior victory by a final score of 6-5.

Tech didn't have much time to celebrate, they still had some business to take care of in game two. It proved to be Holmberg's weekend, as he would score the games first two goals, one in the first period and another in the second. Colton Nikiforuk put the Warriors ahead 3-0 shortly after. The Blue Devils would score twice before Matej Krasny put in the empty-netter, sealing the victory for the Warriors twice in one night.

Indiana Tech defended its conference title, posting a 15-5 conference record, good for a .825 winning percentage. The Warriors earned the first seed in the WHAC Tournament and will face off against the winner of Concordia and Lawrence Tech on Saturday at 3:00 PM. Each WHAC Tournament game will take place at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse from February 18-20.
