Warriors Drop Two to Cougars

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team opened up their season Sunday afternoon at Warrior Park against The University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The Cougars topped the Warriors twice, 10-0, 8-5.

Game 1 | USF 10-0 Indiana Tech

Saint Francis's bats were hot right from the start as they scored four runs in the first inning off a few RBI's and a steal at home. The Warriors were quiet in the first having only one hit on a triple by Meagan Barton with four batters up.

The Cougars continued their hitting ways in the second inning by having three hits and two runs scored. The visitor's pitching was also off to a good start by not allowing a single hit for the Warriors and striking out two batters. There was not much action in the third inning as both teams went three up three down.

Tech's defense and pitching in the fourth inning were stellar allowing no hits off a pop up to first base, a Hannah Middlebrooks strikeout, and a ground out to second. The Warriors got the bats going a little more in the inning with a Karra Leeger-Capraro single and a sacrifice bunt by Meghan Berlin; however, the host still went scoreless in the inning after leaving two runners on base.

USF heated up once again in the fifth inning, scoring four runs and having five hits, giving the Orange and Black one last chance to get the bats going before the mercy rule would end the game. Unfortunately, the Warriors would end the inning with zero runs and zero hits, dropping the game 10-0.

Game 2 | USF 8-5 Indiana Tech

The top of the first seemed to be a good start for the Warriors after Ashley Alvey allowed zero runs and zero hits with a strikeout, a fly out to left field, and a ground out to shortstop. Similar to the Cougars, Tech did not see much action in the inning having zero hits but leaving two runners on base after an error and a walk.

The second inning was scoreless for the Cougars again, but the bats were starting to come to life for the Warriors with a single by Alvey and an Alyssa Fox RBI-single to center field that would send Berlin and Alvey home to make the score 2-0.

USF came back firing in the third inning by scoring four runs and having three hits. Tech went on to score another run in the inning with a homerun to left center by Emma Kelley to cut the visitor lead down to 4-3. The fourth inning proved to be scoreless for both teams after allowing no runs and no hits respectfully.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Saint Francis came out swinging in the fifth, delivering three more runs to make the advantage 7-3. The Orange and Black would not give up as they scored another run on a steal by Fox. Things looked a little better in the sixth inning for the Warriors, going three up three down and sending another run in to cut into the lead a little more 7-5. However, the Warrior comeback fell short after allowing another Cougar run and having zero hits and zero runs in the final inning. USF would go on to win 8-5.
