LAKELAND, Fla. – The Indiana Tech baseball team picked up its first two wins of its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 9-2 win over Northwestern College (called after six innings due to weather) and a 11-8 victory over No. 1-ranked Southeaster University, who was 26-0 prior to the game, Thursday at Ted A. Broer Stadium.
Northwestern struck first against the Warriors in the neutral-site matchup with an RBI single in the third, but the Warriors took advantage of two Raider errors while using six hits to put up eight runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding lead. Following back-to-back singles from
Jacob Daftari and
Mike Snyder to kick off the frame, a throwing error on Northwestern's third baseman allowed the former to score while Snyder came home two batters later following a walk and a hit batsman.
Jayden Reed delivered a big hit with a double to right to drive in two while
Micah O'Donnell drove in two runs two batters later with a single to left center.
The Warriors were batting in the seventh inning until a weather system moved in and the game was called with Tech scheduled to play Southeastern.
Almost seven hours after game one ended, Tech took to the field against the newly-minted number one team in the NAIA, who had been on a tear to start the 2022 season and had the longest winning streak to begin a year since Georgia Gwinnett went 25-0 to kick off the 2016 campaign, which was halted by conference foe Madonna. SEU had the Warriors number in the previous three games this week though, outscoring the Orange and Black 25-9 in a three-game set Sunday and Monday.
But it was the Warriors who struck first with four runs on four hits and a pair of Fire errors in the top of the first and they never looked back.
Parker Bates reached on an error by SEU's third baseman to begin the game and came around to score two batters later on another Fire error following a bunt single by
Manuel Ascanio.
Brice Stultz drove in two batters with a double down the right field line while
Tyler Stahl added a double to center to drive in the fourth Tech run of the game.
Abdel Guadalupe, who had torched the Warriors earlier in the week, continued his torrid stretch with a leadoff homer for the Fire and hit another solo shot in the seventh for his 39
th dinger in a Fire uniform to become the program's all-time home run leader. A two-run blast by Isaac Nunez pulled the hosts within a run in the third, but Tech responded with four runs in the next inning, with three of them coming on solo shots from
Tristan Osika,
Ashtin Moxey and Reed in consecutive at-bats.
O'Donnell plated two more runs in the ninth while Osika doubled in O'Donnell to make it an 11-4 game in the ninth, with the Warriors needing the extra cushion as the Fire came roaring back in the bottom of the ninth with four runs on five hits, including a three-run blast with nobody out to cut the deficit to three, but
Kris Massey regrouped and after a single got the next three batters out to close the door and extinguish Southeastern's winning streak.
Tech (7-9) returns to action Saturday as they start their trek back north with a stop in Thomasville, Georgia to battle Thomas University in a three-game set. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. while Sunday's finale is also set for 1 p.m. from Vanrnedoe Stadium.
