THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Indiana Tech baseball team extended its winning streak to four games with a weekend sweep of Thomas University, winning 8-4 Saturday afternoon and 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium.
The NightHawks struck first with a two-out two-RBI double in the second, but
Parker Bates doubled in
Ashtin Moxey in the top of the third to cut the deficit in half and start a run of six straight scoring frames for the Warriors.
Luis Diaz knotted the game up at 2-2 with an RBI double to center in the fourth while
Brice Stultz drove in
Jayden Reed on an RBI groundout in the fifth. Reed turned around one inning later to make it a 4-2 game with a sacrifice fly to right and scoring
Aron Busick.
Thomas came back with two runs on three hits in the sixth, with a triple by Anthony Doark and a double from Bradley Fleenor.
Manuel Ascanio led things off with a double in the seventh that was followed up with back-to-back singles from Stultz and
Jacob Daftari to load the bases. Tech gained a couple of runs on back-to-back groundouts before Ascanio put the nail in the coffin with a two-run homer in the eighth to make it 8-4.
Hayes Sturtsman went six strong innings on the mound, allowing four runs on six hits while
Spencer Strobel picked up the save by striking out five batters over the final three frames.
Stultz gave Tech the lead in the opening frame with a triple to center that plated Busick (courtesy runner for Ascanio who reached on an E6). Bates scored on a little league home run in the third on a leadoff double to center before scampering home thanks to an error in the field by the NightHawks to make it a 2-0 game. The Warriors took advantage of another Thomas error in the fourth as Daftari scored on a single from Moxey with an error from the hosts right fielder.
Thomas came charging back in the seventh with a two-out two-RBI double from Turner Maddox, but
Ryan Uhlenhake came out of the bullpen to get the third out of the inning. Tech added two more runs in the eight with a sacrifice bunt RBI and a double by
Tristan Osika to make it 5-2. Uhlenhake wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth following a one-out error, double and walk as he got Maddox to line into a double play to end the game.
Tech (9-9) returns to action Tuesday with a doubleheader against Indiana University Southeast. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from the Koetter Sports Baseball Complex.
