The No. 7 – ranked Indiana Tech men's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins this weekend on the road. In their Saturday evening matchup, the Warriors defeated Tusculum University 3-1 before finishing the weekend off with a sweep of Rio Grande.
GREENVILLE, Tenn. – Tech saw a four-set victory (25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 25-13) at Pioneer Arena Saturday night.
The Warriors were led by
Mason Milan with 14 kills on a .706 attack percentage. He also added five digs, two blocks, and two aces.
Brandon Jones dished out 35 assists to go along with six digs and one service ace.
Daynte Stewart added a team high seven digs and four aces while
Chase Christiansen led the block category with five.
The two teams traded points the beginning of the first set before Tech jumped out to a 17-12 advantage after a 7-0 spurt behind the kills of Milan and Stewart forcing a Tusculum timeout. The Pioneers answered back after the break with a couple points of their own, but the Orange and Black fired back with a Milan Kill off the assist from Jones and later a service ace by Milan to take the 20-15 lead. Even after the visitors run, the host did not back down by continuing to put points on the board; however, the Warriors held the Pioneers off and went on to win the set after a kill by
Dante Siracusa.
The second set was a similar story as the first, but the Warriors saw themselves down 4-7 to start. Tech answered the Pioneers start with three straight points to even things up at 7. Both teams went back and forth for a while until late into the set when the Warriors took their largest advantage of the set after a couple scoring runs. The visiting Warriors notched three straight points behind the efforts of a Milan kill and ace before going on a 5-0 run to take the 24-16 lead and eventually take the set.
Tech jumped out to an early 5-3 lead before the Pioneers responded with a run of their own to take the 7-5 lead. The set continued back and forth and was a battle till the end. Tusculum continued their tear, taking a 17-14 lead and eventually making the Warriors call a timeout with a 23-18 advantage. The timeout did not make a difference for Indiana Tech, as the Pioneers scored two more points to win the set.
The Orange and Black got back to their winning ways in the fourth set by only allowing their opponent only 13 points. Tusculum were the first to get on the board before the Warriors saw themselves with the 14-7 advantage causing a Pioneer timeout. After the timeout, the teams traded points for the next six points, but a 9-2 spurt by the Warriors would put the icing on the cake behind a few kills by Milan off the assists of Jones and a Christiansen ace.
RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Warriors gathered a pretty easy Red Storm sweep Sunday afternoon (25-11, 25-22, 25-12) at the Newt Oliver Arena.
Mario Capo led the way for the Warriors with 11 kills.
Chandler Davis distributed a game high 22 assists while
Raekwon Rogers notched three blocks,
Dante Siracusa added 10 digs, and
Ryan Griffel had four aces.
Tech seemed to be in the zone after coming out and taking the 20-7 advantage. The Red Storm were able to put a few more points on the board, but the Warriors continued their dominant efforts by only allowing four more points and finishing the set off with multiple opponent errors.
The start of the second set was quite the opposite for the Warriors. Rio Grande had quite the spurt of their own, jumping out to a 9-1 lead before the Orange and Black were able to put up a couple points behind the efforts of
Peter Demoulin's kill, and a block by
Jon Fonda and Griffel to cut lead back 9-3. The two teams went back and forth the remainder of the set with Tech still climbing their way back from the early deficit. The Warriors were able to tie things up at 18 and go on a 7-3 run later to hold the host off and take the set.
Similar to the first set, the Red Storm struggled to score. The host were held to only 12 points in the set. Things were close to start the set, as the two teams traded points until a 10-0 run by the Warriors that saw a 20-9 advantage, which would ultimately seal the deal. Rio Grande answered back with a few more points, but it was no match for the impressive performance from the guests as a couple errors and a kill by Capo topped things off.
With the two wins, Tech moves to 21-1 overall and 9-1 in the WHAC. The team will be on the road March 16 to face Mount Vernon Nazarene at 7 P.M.
