FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Indiana Tech men's soccer opened its 2022 campaign with a spirited 0-0 draw against visiting Governor's State Wednesday night at Warrior Athletic Field. GSU was on the front foot in the first half, outshooting the Warriors 8-0, with Tech applying most of the pressure after the halftime break. Tech's
Jaume Salvado and Jaguar goalkeeper Emigdio Lopez each tallied four saves to earn matching shutouts.
After a slow first half, the Warriors looked more lively to start the second 45 minutes.
Luke Jones forced Lopez into arguably the best save of the match just one minute after the restart. In trademark Jones fashion, the attacker cut inside on his left boot and unleashed a shot destined for the top left corner. Lopez got enough of a hand on the effort to keep the game scoreless. Subsequent efforts from
Jonas Kahlmann at 54:57 and
Ryan Steele in the 70th minute were turned away by the Jaguar freshman. Lorezno Battagliarian beat Lopez in the 74th minute, but the shot caromed off the crossbar.
The result was Tech's first season-opening draw since a 1-1 stalemate against Saint Francis on August 22, 2008. The Warriors return to the pitch August 31 at Grace College, looking for their first win under head coach
Paul Gilbert, in a 7 PM kickoff. Tech won the two most recent meetings in the series, with Grace last claiming victory over the Warriors in 2012.
