ELIDA, Ohio -- Indiana Tech moved to 4-0 on the young 2022 season with two more straight-set wins to close out the Racer Rumble, hosted by UNOH. The Warriors eased past Kentucky Christian 3-0 before outlasting Union (Ky.) by the same margin at Elida High School.
Union (4-4) gave Tech its stiffest test of the tournament in set one of the final match, turning a seven-point deficit into a 25-24 set-point lead. The Orange and Black kept its cool, with kills from
Emma Westra and
Noelle VanOort sandwiching a Westra /
Havilyn Cummings block, on the final three points to claim the 27-25 victory. From there, a solid defensive effort was enough to keep the Bulldogs from mounting any additional threats in straightforward 25-10 and 25-12 games. The Warriors finished with 38 digs and 18 block assists in the match, with
Jacey Blust's 10 digs, VanOort's nine digs, and Cummings' seven block assists setting the pace. Offensively,
Andrea Schriver (21 assists) and
Kelsey Schaldenbrand (13) quarterbacked the attack, with VanOort (11) and Westra (10) each pounding double-digit kills.
In the 2 PM match, the story was Kentucky Christian's hitting woes (-.061) and Tech's balance offensively and defensively. Cummings (nine kills), Westra (eight), and
Taylor Sorg (seven) were the top three attacking producers inÂ
Matt Fishman's lineup. Per usual, Blust racked up robust dig totals (19) to frustrate any KCU chances of an upset in the 25-11, 25-17, 25-13 performance.
The Warriors head west to Bellevue, Neb., next weekend for dates with Grand View (Iowa), Avila (Mo.), Ottawa (Kan.), and Columbia International (S.C.) at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center on the campus of Bellevue University.Â
