ELIDA, Ohio -- Indiana Tech (2-0) started the
Matt Fishman era in emphatic fashion, earning two straight-set wins over Fisk (1-1) and Miami-Middletown (0-2) on Friday at the Racer Rumble, hosted by UNOH at Elida High School.
Noelle VanOort totaled 18 kills in the two matches while
Andrea Schriver and
Kelsey Schaldenbrand combined for 49 assists. Defensively,
Jacey Blust led the way with 23 total digs and the team posted 18 blocks over two contests.
In match one versus Fisk, the Warriors cruised after overcoming a slow start in which they hit just .176 in a 25-15 opening set win. Tech improved its attacking to .441 and .440 in 25-8 set two and 25-11 set three wins, respectively, to close out the Bulldogs. VanOort registered a team-leading 10 kills in 21 total attacks, with a .333 hitting percentage. Havilyn Cummins enjoyed a very efficient start to her final season in the Orange and Black, posting seven kills on nine swings (.778). Blust (16) and VanOrt (11) reached double-digits in digs, while Cummings and
Jacqueline Allaway each contributed four blocks, as Tech limited Fisk to just 11 kills in the sweep.
The nightcap followed the same pattern, as the Warriors held the Thunderhawks to 11 kills in three sets. Tech's best offensive set of match two was the opener, which saw the Summit City side hit .556 with 13 kills in a 25-7 win. The Warriors kept Miami-Middletown at bay in the final two sets, with five players reaching six kills, eight posting two or more digs, and five getting in on blocking action at the net in another straight-set triumph. Sara Gomperts matching her total with 11 dimes.
Indiana Tech returns to Elida High School for two more matches Saturday. The Warriors face off with Kentucky Christian at 2 PM before a stiff test from Union College (Ky.) gets underway at 6 PM.
