COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team punched their ticket to the NAIA National Tournament Final Site on Saturday afternoon with a huge upset victory over #2 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.).
The Warriors came into the matchup against the Blue Raiders with momentum on their side after their first-round win over RV Ottawa University (Kan.) Thursday afternoon. Lindsey Wilson had a bye in the first round and would watch the Warriors and Braves tire each other out in the first round, as they awaited a winner. With just one day of rest between games, Indiana Tech would face the daunting task of playing the #2 team in the country on their home field. However, despite the challenge the Warriors would not be phased. After a couple of failed chances by the Blue Raiders in the first 20 minutes of the game, the Warriors would settle into the match and start to take over throughout the remainder of the first half. Then, in the 38
th minute,
Douglas Appiah Kubi would score the game's opening goal off a corner kick from
Luke Jones and a flick on from
Ryan Steele to Appiah Kubi, putting the Warriors ahead 1-0 at the half! Tech was now only 45 minutes away from a trip to Wichita, Kansas and reaching the final site. The second half began as a back-and-forth affair, but in the 66
th minute Lindsey Wilson would find an equalizing goal with a header following a corner kick. With just under 25 minutes left to play in regulation, the Blue Raiders had captured all the momentum in the game and were relentlessly attacking the Warriors. Some great defensive play and a few saves from goalkeeper
David Martinez kept the Warriors alive as the onslaught continued. Tech would finally relieve some pressure and get the ball deep into the Blue Raiders zone. After a good press from the Warriors caused a turnover in the corner of the field, Tech would swing the ball around to the
Andreas Michael at the top of the 18-yard box. He would then squeeze a ball through to Appiah Kubi where he would smash the ball into the bottom left corner propelling the Warriors to a 2-1 lead with under eight minutes to play. The Orange & Black would defend the last 7:48 of the game like their lives depended on it, not taking any chances in the back. The Blue Raiders would get two shots off in the final two minutes, but one would go wide and the other would be saved by Martinez, who finished with four on the day, as the Warriors would hang on to upset #2 Lindsey Wilson by a final of 2-1.
The Warriors advance past the second round for the second time in the last three years and move onto the sweet sixteen! Tech will now head to the final site in Wichita, Kansas next week, where they will face #15 Keiser University (Fla.) on Tuesday, November 28
th at 10am (CT).
