FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's hockey team defeated Concordia University in both of their games this weekend to stay perfect in WHAC play through eight games.
On Friday, the No. 10 ranked Warriors would host the visiting Cardinals, defeating them handedly 5-1. Tech would get on the board first when
Michael Dalaly scored unassisted at the 9:13 mark of the first period. Concordia would find an equalizer on the powerplay with 3:36 to go in the first, tying the score at 1-1 into the intermission. In the second period, tensions would rise and penalties would mount, amassing to ten total in the period! On the powerplay, the Warriors would take back the lead midway through the second off the stick of
Malik Ali, assisted by
Avery Smith and
Joey Mocnik. With 51 seconds left in the second period,
Joey McCreadie would add a third for The Orange & Black, giving Tech a 3-1 lead after two periods of play. The third period would be all Indiana Tech.
Luke Anderson would score in the first ten seconds from a
Brandon Plummer assist and
Pavel Svoboda would add another from
Francesco Santaniello with just over seven minutes to play, as the Warriors would finish on top 5-1. The Warriors would outshoot the Cardinals 28-26 in the game. Tech goaltender
Braedyn Funke would save 25 of the 26 Concordia attempts on goal, skating away with his fifth win of the season.
On Saturday, Tech would travel to Canton, Michigan for game two against Concordia. With tempers high, coming off a Tech win that included 15 combined penalties on Friday night, a win Saturday would take a scrappy, hard-fought effort. Most of the action would take place early in this one with all three goals in the contest coming in the first nine minutes of the game. Concordia would score first in under two minutes of play to go ahead 1-0. Then Tech would answer at 6:54 into the period with a goal from
Joey Mocnik, assisted by
Pavel Svoboda and
Alex Carrothers.
Avery Smith would score for the Warriors 1:11 later putting the Warriors ahead for good.
Wil Campbell and
Malik Ali would pick up assists on Smith's ultimately game winning goal. Although the second and third periods had no goals, they would still be action packed. Eleven total penalties would be called in the final two periods in a chippy game that had boiled over from the night before. Tech would finish the game with 40 shots on goal to Concordia's 26.
Ty Barnhill picked up his sixth win of the season in goal for the Warriors, making 25 saves, including 14 in the third period to deny the Cardinals a tying goal.
Indiana Tech improves to 11-2-0 on the season and 8-0-0 in the WHAC, bringing the win streak to eleven straight. The Orange & Black will face off with No. 13 University of Michigan-Dearborn in their next weekend series with a home game on Friday, November 10
