Warriors Slide Past Cardinals in WHAC Opening Round

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team hosted the Concordia University (Mich.) Cardinals in the opening round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament. The Warriors claimed the top seed in the tournament by winning the regular season title and started their pursuit of the WHAC double with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22) win over the Cardinals.

The Warriors didn't get the start they had hoped for to open the WHAC tournament, as they dropped the first set while never leading. Set two started like the first as the Cardinals took the early lead and maintained their hold until the Warriors finally broke through to take their first lead of the night with a kill from Taylor Paul to put Tech up 14-13. From that point, the Warriors closed the set on an 11-7 run to claim the second set 25-20. Little separated the two teams in the third set as they traded leads multiple times. Trailing 20-18, the Warriors took a timeout that proved to be crucial as they closed the set on a 7-3 run, winning 25-23, highlighted by a tremendous defensive effort from Noelle VanOort that resulted in a point for the Warriors. The fourth set was another battle for the Warriors, once again finding themselves trailing in the closing stages of the set. The Warriors refused to be beaten. Trailing 19-21, the Warriors closed the set on a 6-1 run highlighted by kills from Hanna Teich, Noelle VanOort, and Emma Westra to claim the set 25-22 and win the match.

The Warrior offense was led by Taylor Paul with 17 kills, Andrea Schriver and Madison Mayes with 1 ace apiece, and Schriver led the team in assists with 51. Taylor Sorg was a staple for the Warrior's defense above the net with a team-high three blocks, while Noelle VanOort led the team with 17 digs.

With the win tonight, the Orange and Black host the remainder of the conference tournament, with the semifinal games being played at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
