FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Warriors played host to cross-town rivals, the University of Saint Francis, on Thursday evening as they went on to sweep the visiting Cougars in the two-game series.
After two scoreless innings in game one of the doubleheader, the Warriors bats got hot in the third, hitting home six runs in the inning. The highlight of the inning came from
Meghan Berlin's two RBI double, followed by an RBI single from
Bella Brock that saw Berlin come around for the sixth Tech run. The Warriors would add a seventh off an RBI triple from
Alyssa Fox in the fourth inning, as Tech would go on to win game one by a score of 7-1. Pitching and earning the win for the Warriors was
Savannah Bravo, making this her second win of the season in her first two starts. The freshman from Arroyo Grande, California, pitched six shutdown innings for the orange and black, throwing ten strikeouts and giving up just one run on six hits.
Jayme Koning closed the game out for the Warriors, pitching the last inning, retiring all three batters she faced.
In game two, both the Cougars and the Warriors offenses turned it up a notch, as the Warriors came back from down 7-1 in the fourth inning to win the high-scoring contest 13-10. The bottom of the fourth inning was long and restless for the visiting Cougars as they gave up 10 runs in the innings to the mighty Warriors. Indiana led off the bottom of the inning with three straight doubles, courtesy of Koning,
Madisyn Miller, and Brock. Later in the inning,
Karra Leeger-Capraro hit a 3-run home run to pull the Warriors within one. A few batters later Koning hit a grand slam for the Warriors, giving them the lead for good. The Warriors would add one more in the inning to give Tech the 11-7 lead heading into the fifth. Saint Francis battled back in the fifth adding three runs to trim the Tech lead back to one. However, the Warriors were not phased, adding two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of
Kennedi Sullivan and Koning, to secure the win. Koning ended the game going an impressive 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and five RBIs. The Warriors' pitching effort was split between starter
Carlye Walter and relievers Leeger-Capraro and Koning. Leeger-Capraro earned the win, making it her second of the season.
The Warriors will look to stay unbeaten this weekend, with a doubleheader at home against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Saturday, February 25
th at 12 and 2PM EST.
