FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team hosted Madonna University on Tuesday night for the WHAC Tournament final, where Madonna handed Indiana Tech their worst loss of the season to take the WHAC Tournament trophy back to Michigan.
The game started with Mark Mettie and Madonna showing what they came to do in Fort Wayne. Mettie scored back-to-back 3-point shots in the game's first minute and helped Madonna build a 10-2 lead after only 2 minutes of action.
The Warriors, led by
Josh Kline, fought to catch up to Madonna the entire game. Kline scored 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
Cory McKinney added 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while
Blake Davison and
Grant Smith added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Warriors' commitment on the court was worthy of applause, but Madonna was always one step ahead in the game.
Counting on an inspired trio composed of Brendan Young, Mark Mettie, and Henry Speight, Madonna forced Indiana Tech's worst loss of the season, scoring 96 points and winning by 13 points. Young finished the WHAC final with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Mettie scored 22 points, shooting 5-8 from the 3-point line, and grabbed 7 rebounds. Speight added 21 points and 7 rebounds.
With the result, Indiana Tech saw the dream of the first WHAC double for the Men's Basketball program being postponed for next season, and a winning streak of 12 games ended.
But there is still much to fight for in the Warriors' season. Indiana Tech, No. 6 in the NAIA ranking, hosts the First and Second Rounds of the National Tournament on March 7 and 8. Madonna also qualified for the Nationals, and both teams will find out whom they play against on Thursday (March 2) during the NAIA Selection Show.
