KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 6 Indiana Tech men's basketball team defeated No. 11 Jamestown University by 61-51 in Kansas City on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2004-05 and are 3 wins away from the unprecedented NAIA National Championship.
In the first match in history between Indiana Tech and Jamestown, the Warriors relied on WHAC Player of the Year,
Rog Stein, a 15-2 run at the end of the 1
st half and another 12-2 run in the middle of the 2
nd half to control Mason Walters' inspired night and defeat Jamestown.
Stein's 17-point night, with 11 of his 17 in the 2
nd half, was key for Indiana Tech's win. Stein commanded the Warriors offensively, appearing in the clutch moments of the game, and was able to combat the inspired game that Walters had for Jamestown. Walters scored 26 points and added 8 rebounds, scoring more than all his teammates combined.
Walters was a headache for the Warriors that started the game losing in the first minutes, but with a 15-2 run at the end of the first half, Indiana Tech could take the lead in the game and reach halftime, winning 29-24.
Jamestown tried to stay close on the scoreboard, but with another great run in the 2
nd half, Indiana Tech outscored Jamestown 12-2 between minute 13 and minute 8 to build a 10-point lead that would pave the way for the win.
The Warriors showed how ferocious they can be on the defensive side of the ball as they limited Jamestown to a shooting percentage of just 29.0% from the floor and 22.2% from beyond the three-point line, well below their season averages of 49.5% and 38.5%. Jamestown, who leads the country with an average of 11.1 threes made per game, made only 4 threes in the contest tonight.
With the win, the Warriors advanced to the NAIA National Tournament quarterfinal, where Indiana Tech will face No.2 Arizona Christian University on Wednesday (March 15) at 7 p.m. CT.
