LIVONIA, Mich. – Sunday afternoon's doubleheader between Indiana Tech and Madonna University (Mich.) was a battle between two of the last three undefeated WHAC teams in conference play. The Warriors entered the day at 6-0 in the WHAC, while the Crusaders were 4-0, as both teams are also receiving votes in the latest NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Warriors would emerge victorious after 12 innings. The game remained scoreless through four innings before Maire Trouba picked up an RBI while pinch hitting in the top of the fifth inning to give Tech the 1-0 lead. Alyssa Fox would double the Warriors lead with an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but Madonna would score two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at two and force extra innings. After four more scoreless innings, Indiana Tech's Fox hit a triple in the top of the 12th inning, where she then scored off an error by Madonna's second baseman, giving the Warriors a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 12th, Savannah Bravo retired three straight Crusader batters to close the game and deliver Indiana Tech the thrilling 3-2 victory. Bravo pitched all 12 innings for the Warriors, facing 41 batters in the game. She threw ten strikeouts and gave up just five hits and two runs, picking up her ninth win of the season in a big-time win for the Warriors.
The Warriors followed their exciting win in game one with a 6-3 victory in game two as they swept the Crusaders in the two-game series. Tech got out to a 2-1 lead through four innings before a big fifth inning that saw them take a 5-1 lead. Katie O'Drobinak had the highlight of the inning with a solo homerun, while Meghan Berlin and Trouba also added RBIs in the inning for the Warriors. The orange and black would go on to win 6-3 as they now move to 8-0 in WHAC play. Carlye Walter picked up the win, her seventh of the season, pitching all seven innings. She gave up five hits and only one earned run, while throwing three strikeouts. Walter also picked up an RBI on the offensive end in the fourth inning, giving the Warriors a 2-1 lead at the time.
The Warriors will look to ride their nine-game win streak into their next doubleheader against the University of Michigan Dearborn on Monday, April 3rd at 3 and 5 pm.
