JOLIET, Ill. – This weekend, the Indiana Tech volleyball team is in Joliet, Illinois, to participate in the Big Dogs Classic hosted by the University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the Pat Sullivan Center. Friday, the Warriors continued where they left off after the OnSet tournament with two more wins. First, Tech picked off the hosts St. Francis 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-12, 25-15), then took down the Spring Arbor University Cougars in a 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-16) fashion.
Against the Saints, set one was a story of two good runs for the Warriors. The first was a 6-1 run highlighting kills from
Jacqueline Allaway and
Emma Westra, which gave the Orange and Black a 10-7 lead. The second run was a 6-0 run kickstarted by a Westra service ace to give tech a 20-15 lead they wouldn't concede. In a back-and-forth second set, the Saints outlasted Tech to draw level at 1 set apiece. The Orange and Black were dominant in sets three and four with two double-digit wins to take the match.
Westra led the attack for Tech in match one with 15 kills, while
Taylor Paul topped both service aces and blocks for the Warriors with 6 and 2, respectively.
Andrea Schriver led the team in assists with 32, while
Jacey Blust held down the back line with 19 digs.
In the evening match against the Cougars, Spring Arbor opened the scoring in set one before
Noelle VanOort recorded three straight kills to get Tech rolling and give them a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the set. Set two was another dominant performance with an early run featuring kills from VanOort, Paul, and
Taylor Sorg that put the Warriors in the driver's seat to take the set. A highlight for Tech in the dropped third set was Graduate Student
Emma Westra, who recorded 3 kills, which put her past the 1,000 career kill mark. The Warriors closed the match, controlling the fourth set as they never trailed.
VanOort and Westra led the Warrior attack in the second match with 15 kills apiece. VanOort also led Tech in aces with 3, while Schriver posted 49 assists. Blust led the team with 17 digs.
The Warriors move to 5-1 on the young season and finish the Big Dogs Classic on Saturday, facing No. 15 ranked Montana Tech at 9 AM and No. 17 Bellevue University at 2 PM.
